Opel and Vauxhall Oil Service Light Reset: Which Method Works on Your Model

After an oil change on an Opel or Vauxhall, the service reminder — shown as “InSP”, “Change Engine Oil Soon”, or a wrench icon — stays on until manually cleared. The reset method varies significantly between generations. Older models use a Trip button sequence, newer ones use a stalk-mounted SET/CLR button, and current models use steering wheel controls to navigate the instrument cluster menu. Since none of these methods require a scanner, the reset takes under two minutes once you identify the correct approach.

Via Trip Reset Button

This method works on the Corsa D (2006–2014), Astra G, Astra H, Zafira A, Zafira B, and most older Opel models that display the “InSP” message on the instrument cluster:

  1. Turn the ignition completely off.
  2. Press and hold the Trip Reset button on the instrument cluster — do not release it.
  3. While holding the button, turn the ignition to the ON position without starting the engine.
  4. Continue holding the Trip button. The display will flash “InSP” several times, then show dashes “– – – –”.
  5. Turn the ignition off and release the button.
  6. Repeat steps 1–5 a second time.
  7. On the third repetition, after the dashes appear, start the engine instead of turning off. The service light will clear.

On the Corsa D specifically, some variants require pressing and holding the brake pedal during the sequence — if the first attempt fails without the brake, repeat with the brake pedal held throughout steps 2–5.

Via Turn Signal Stalk SET/CLR Button

The Corsa D/E from 2015 onward, Astra J, and Insignia A use a SET/CLR or BC button on the turn signal stalk:

  1. Turn the ignition to ON without starting the engine. On push-button start models, press Start without pressing the brake pedal.
  2. Press the SET/CLR or BC button on the stalk repeatedly until the oil life or service reminder screen appears on the instrument cluster display.
  3. Once on the oil change screen, press and hold the SET/CLR button until the system asks you to confirm the reset.
  4. Press SET/CLR again to confirm.
  5. Turn the ignition off and restart to verify.

On the Insignia A (2008–2017), the reset additionally requires pressing the Set button on the stalk, then confirming with the controller wheel. The display will show “Oil Life Reset” confirming the procedure completed correctly.

Via Steering Wheel Controls

The Insignia B (2017–2022), Mokka B, Grandland X, Corsa F, and Astra L use steering wheel buttons to navigate the instrument cluster menu:

  1. Press and hold the Start/Stop button for approximately 6 seconds without pressing the brake pedal to activate the ignition without starting the engine.
  2. Use the left or right arrow buttons on the steering wheel to navigate to the Car or Vehicle Information section of the instrument cluster.
  3. Scroll to Oil Life or Remaining Oil Life.
  4. Press and hold the tick (✓) or OK button to reset the counter.
  5. Confirm the reset when prompted.
  6. Turn the ignition off and restart to verify.

On the 2020 Insignia B specifically, the sequence starts with the left arrow to reach the Car menu, then scrolling down to Oil Life, then holding the OK button until the reset confirmation appears.

Via Touchscreen

Some Grandland X and Mokka B variants with a larger infotainment screen manage the service reminder through the vehicle settings:

  1. Turn the ignition to ON or start the vehicle.
  2. On the touchscreen, navigate to Settings → Vehicle → Oil Life or Maintenance.
  3. Tap Reset and confirm.
  4. Restart to verify.

Why the InSP Light Returns

If the service light reappears immediately after a confirmed reset, two things commonly cause this. First, the reset was not fully completed — the ignition was switched off before the display confirmed the reset, or the button was released at the wrong moment. Second, a fault code stored in the ECU is triggering the warning independently of the oil life counter — in this case, an OBD2 scan is required to identify the specific fault.

On older models using the Trip button method, the three-repetition sequence is the most common source of confusion. All three repetitions must be completed with the correct timing — releasing the button or turning off the ignition at the wrong step requires starting the entire sequence from the beginning.
