Geely Engine Oil: Correct Specs for Every Model and Engine

Geely engines share a technical foundation with Volvo — the 1.5T turbocharged units in the Coolray and Okavango use the same engine family as several Volvo models — which means the oil specification follows the same logic. Using a generic API SN oil that doesn’t meet the VCC RBS0-2AE standard on a Coolray is the same mistake as using it on a Volvo XC40. The right viscosity and the right approval both matter.
Coolray 1.5T (JLH-3G15TD / BHE15)
The Coolray’s 1.5T turbocharged engine requires full synthetic oil meeting the Volvo VCC RBS0-2AE standard. This spec was developed jointly by Geely and Volvo for the shared engine platform. The recommended grades are:
- 0W-20 — primary recommendation for all temperatures above −30°C; Shell Helix Ultra Professional AS-L 0W-20 is the factory-specified product
- 5W-40 API SN Plus — acceptable alternative in markets where 0W-20 full synthetic is harder to source
Capacity: approximately 4.0–4.2 litres with filter replacement.
Using 5W-30 oils that meet only ACEA C2/C3 without the VCC RBS0-2AE approval is not recommended, despite the viscosity being close. The additive chemistry in VCC RBS0-2AE-approved oils is specifically formulated for the turbocharger lubrication requirements and timing system in this engine family.
Okavango 2.0T
The Okavango uses the larger 2.0T TGDI engine, which runs slightly higher thermal loads than the 1.5T. The specification follows the same Volvo-derived standard:
- 0W-20 VCC RBS0-2AE — primary recommendation
- 5W-30 API SN Plus or ACEA C2/C3 — acceptable where VCC-approved oil is unavailable
Capacity: approximately 5.0–5.2 litres with filter.
The 7-speed wet DCT in the Okavango requires Shell Spirax S5 DCT10 transmission fluid — this is specific and not interchangeable with standard ATF. Capacity is approximately 6.5 litres for a full fill.
Emgrand 1.5L and 1.5T
The Emgrand sold in Southeast Asian and Middle Eastern markets uses either the naturally aspirated 1.5L or the turbocharged 1.5T variant. Oil requirements differ between them:
- 1.5L naturally aspirated — 5W-30 or 5W-40 full synthetic meeting API SN or SP. Less demanding than the turbocharged variants; standard full synthetic from any reputable brand is acceptable.
- 1.5T turbocharged — same VCC RBS0-2AE or API SN Plus specification as the Coolray. Capacity approximately 3.8–4.0 litres with filter.
EX5 and GX3 Pro
The EX5 electric model does not require engine oil. It does require:
- Reduction gear oil — manufacturer-specified fluid, typically changed at the first major service interval
- Brake fluid DOT 4 — standard replacement every 2 years regardless of mileage
The GX3 Pro uses the 1.5L naturally aspirated engine and follows the same specification as the Emgrand 1.5L — 5W-30 or 5W-40 API SN/SP full synthetic. Capacity approximately 3.5 litres with filter.
How Often to Change
Geely’s official recommendation across petrol models is 10,000 km or 12 months, whichever comes first. In markets with extreme heat — UAE, Philippines, Malaysia — independent mechanics widely recommend 7,500 km intervals for turbocharged engines, particularly the Coolray 1.5T, due to higher average operating temperatures and stop-start urban traffic conditions that stress the turbocharger oil more than highway driving.
For the oil filter, Geely recommends replacing it at every oil change. Running an old filter with new oil is a common shortcut that defeats part of the purpose of the change — the old filter holds degraded oil that mixes back into the new fill immediately.
Reading the Oil Label
When buying oil for any turbocharged Geely model, look for VCC RBS0-2AE on the label. It must appear explicitly — not just ACEA C2 or API SN. Both Castrol EDGE and Shell Helix Ultra have product lines meeting this standard, but not every product in those ranges qualifies. Verify the specific product code before purchasing rather than relying on the brand name alone.
