Important Notes on Tire and Wheel Compatibility
- Switching from 18-inch to 20-inch wheels requires reducing the tire sidewall height to maintain the same overall diameter and preserve speedometer accuracy
- The bolt pattern change from 6×139.7 (WD21/R50/R51) to 5×114.3 (R52/R53) means wheels are not cross-compatible between these generations without adapters
- Using tires more than 3% larger or smaller in overall diameter than OEM can affect ABS, traction control, and odometer readings
- Always match the load index and speed rating to or above OEM specifications when fitting replacement tires
- For winter tires, maintaining the same rim diameter is recommended unless using a dedicated winter steel wheel set
- TPMS (Tire Pressure Monitoring System) is present from 2005 onward; new sensors must be programmed when changing wheels
- Recommended tire inflation for most R52 and R53 trims: 35 PSI front, 35 PSI rear (verify on door jamb sticker)
